SRI RENGAYAKI SAMETHA SRI RENGANATHA PARA BRAHMANE  NAMAH

Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Parayana Sabha, Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli,Tamil Nadu, India started in a very small way in the late eighties with weekly recitation (parayanaa) every Saturday of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam ( chanting the 1008 names of Lord Vishnu/Sriman Narayanan)' for peace & tranquility in the world. Initially, only 4 to 5 devotees used to chant the Vishnu Sahasranama in the 'Sri Nadhamunigal Sannadhi'  of  the Sri Renganathaswamy temple in the holy city of  Srirangam, which is the most important 'Vaishnava Divya Kshetra' on earth and is also known as 'Bhuloka Vaikuntam'. Subsequent to the 'Samprokshana' of the Sri Nadhamunigal Sannadhi in about 6 months after the start of the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanaa, the group was requested by the temple authorities to chant the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama in the Garuda Mandapam of the Sri  Renganathaswamy temple also. As the positive effects & power of chanting the Vishnu Sahasranamam became evident, the number of devotees began to swell & the number of parayanaas also started increasing.

Now, the Sabha has around 100 devotees and about 60-70 devotees chant the Sahasranama at least once every day. The devotees are of various age groups from school children to elderly people. Anyone interested in chanting the Vishnu Sahasranamam is welcome to join the group. There is no restriction of any kind. The parayanaa is  conducted in many Sannadhis of the Srirangam Sri Renganathaswamy Temple like Thayar sannadhi, Chakratazhvaar sannandhi, Kothandaramar Sannadhi, Keezha Pattabhiraman sannadhi, Vasudeva Perumal sanndhi, Krishnar sannadhi, Venugopalan sannadhi, Dhanvantari sannadhi, Tirukurallappan sannadhi, KattazhgiyaSingar (Lakshmi Narasimhar) sannadhi, Nadhamuni sannadhi, Desikan sannadhi etc.  The normal schedule of parayanaa for some of the 'Stars'/Nakshatra and 'Thithis' is as follows:

The other regular parayanaas like those at Cauvery Thayar Sannadhi, Hayagreevar sannadhi, Sri Lakshmi Narayana Swamy temple- Akhilandeshwari Gardens-Melur road, Adhawa Complex, Vinayagar temple- Vignesh Paradise etc. are scheduled depending on convenience. In addition to the regular parayanaas, the sabha is requested to conduct Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanaas at other temples as well as residences in & outside Srirangam.  On many days there are 3 to 4 parayanaas & the members have to go from one place to another to meet the schedule.

The daily parayanaa starts with Aarthi & chanting of the mangala sloka 'Lakshmi sharana laakshanga sakshi Shrivatsa Vakshase, Kshemangaraya Sarvesham Sri Rangesaya Mangalam'.The devotees then do 'Dhyana' on their respective Gurus/Aacharyaas for a few minutes followed by silent prayer to Sriman Naarayanaa for redressal of specific problems/difficulties, if requested by anyone. The chanting of Sri  Vishnu Sahasranamam is followed by Sri Panchayuda stotram, Sri Dwadasnama Panchjaram, Sri Mahalakshmi ashtotra sadanama stotram/ Sri Mahalakshmi ashtakam after which, a combination of some of  the following slokas is chanted depending on the sannadhi:

  • Sri SudershanAshtakam
  • Sri KrishnaAshtakam
  • Sri Guruvayurappan Maskaram
  • Sri RengaAthashtakam
  • Sri LaksmiNarasimha Ashtakam
  • Sri Garuda Dandakam
The daily parayanaa concludes with chanting of Sri Hanuman Stotram, Mangala Slokas (During Aarthi), Sri Rama Naama Mahimai and one Paasuram from Tiruppavai. The programme for the next day is announced before the devotees disperse. The parayanaa is generally conducted in the evenings. The detailed schedule of the Sahasranama parayanaas for each month is distributed on the last day of the previous month to all the members. The schedule for each day of the month can be known by clicking on 'Parayanaa Schedule for the month'. The lyrics (in English) for some of the slokas are avialable on the page 'Sloka lyrics in English'.

On every Ekadashi (11th day after the full moon & new moon)  the devotees go around the four Chitra streets surrounding the Lord Renganathaswamy temple starting from Padala Krishna sannadhi on South Chitra street (Veedi Pradikshina) chanting Vishnu sahasranamam  at 5.30 a.m. 'Veedhi Pradikshina' chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam is also done at 5 p.m. on English New year, Tamil festival of Pongal, Tamil New year day, Deepavali festival and Car festivals (Ther) of Lord Renganatha like Chitra Ther, Panguni Ther, Thai Ther. The Sabha is also requested to do Veedhi Pradikshina on some special occassions like accompanying the 'Maryadai'(gifts) sent by the TTD Devasthanam from the Tirupathi temple to the Srirangam Temple on Kaisika Ekadasi.

Sri K. Raghunathan,  the President of the Sabhais the main architect of the Sabha & its activities. He involves himself whole heartedly  with full devotion in all the activities & parayanaas of th.e Sabha despite his very busy office schedule. Due to his untiring work, sincerity & devotion, the Sabha has gained reputation & is requested to chant Sahasranamam in temples & houses outside Srirangam also. The sabha is invited to participate every year in the  Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Akhanda Parayanaas at Chennai, Bangalore, Pondicherry, Neyveli,Ttirupathi etc.

The Sabha started conducting Akhanda Parayanaas (Continuously chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama) on 2nd October every year chanting Vishnu Sahasranama non stop from 6 a.m to 6 p.m in 1993. The Akhanda Parayanaa starts at 6 a.m. with 'Sankalpa' by one of the priests of Sri Renganathaswamy Temple followed by 'Veedhi Pradhikshana' (going around the Sri Renganathaswamy Temple on the four Chitra Streets in a clockwise fashion). Following the chanting of Sri Vishnu Sahasranama from 6 A.m to 6 P.M., other slokas like Sri Panchayuda stotram, Sri Dwadasnama Panchjaram, Sri Mahalakshmi ashtotra sadanama stotram, Sri Garuda Dandakam, Sri Sudershanashtakam, Sri Krishnaashtakam, Sri Guruvayurappan maskaram, Sri Rengaathashtakam, Sri LaksmiNarasimha Ashtakam, Sri Hanumat Stotram, mangala slokas (During Aarthi), Sri Rama Naama Mahimai are also chanted. Prasadam is distributed following aarthi.Outstation Sri Vishnu Shasranama Paarayana sabhas like those from Bangalore, Pondicherry, Neyveli, Madurai, Chennai etc. actively participate in the Akhanda Parayanaa. Around 1500 devotees participate in the Akhanda Parayanaa including around 500-600 outstation devotees. It is  very thrilling to experience the vibrations caused by the chorus chanting of Sri Vishnu Sahasranama by more than a thousand people. The Sabha takes care of the boarding & lodging of all outstation guests. Dadhi aradhana (serving of free wholesome food) is performed for all the participants during the day.

The  funds for conducting the Akhanda Parayana  & Dadhi Aradhana are met from the door to door collections made by the sabha members as well as donations and sposhorships received in cash & kind. The sabha also publishes a book titled "Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stotrams" containing all the stotrams that are chanted in the daily parayanaas and sells it for a heavily subsidised price of Rs.10/- only. The subsidy is met from donations received for the purpose. The President, Shri K. Raghunathan (Please click on' contact us' page) can be contacted for arranging Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanaas and also for details regarding sponsorship, contribution, donations etc. The Sabha does not charge anything for conducting Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanaas.
